Colonial Places, Convict Spaces: Penal Transportation in Global Context, c. 1600-1940

Between 9-10 December 1999, the Department of Economic & Social History, University of Leicester (UK) will host an interdisciplinary conference: Colonial Places, Convict Spaces: Penal Transportation in Global Context, c. 1600-1940. Its aim is to draw together scholars researching the penal transportation of convicts in European and colonial context. Geographically, it will span Europe, the Americas (including the Carribean), Australia, India, Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean.
