UNSW SYMPOSIUM 2000
"MANDATORY SENTENCING -RIGHTS AND WRONGS"
The rights and wrongs of mandatory sentencing come under the spotlight in
UNSW's annual symposium, taking place at the Kensington campus on Saturday,
28 October. And the public is invited to join the debate.
Dato' Param Cumaraswamy, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of
Judges and Lawyers, will present the keynote address. He will be followed
by a prestigious lineup of speakers that includes ATSIC Commissioner Eric
Wynne, former Chief Justice of Australia the Hon Sir Anthony Mason AC KBE,
and UNSW Visiting Professor and former Chief Justice of Australia, the Hon.
Sir Gerard Brennan AC KBE.
To ensure the full range of opinions is represented, the Premier of Western
Australia, the Hon. Mr Richard Court, and the Federal Attorney-General, the
Hon Mr Daryl Williams, AM, have also been invited to speak.
"At a time when mandatory sentencing in Australia is subject to worldwide
scrutiny, especially during the Olympics, it is vital that the general
public is given the facts and opportunity to form their opinions based on
substantive knowledge," said Professor Paul Redmond, Dean of the Faculty of
Law at UNSW.
"This symposium is a service to the community at large where people can get
the facts, hear the opinions and join the debate."
The Symposium, which will run from 9.00am to approximately 3.00pm, is free
and open to all. Admission is by ticket only, and seats may be reserved by
calling the UNSW Events Hotline 02-9385 1030.
